The Adult Multiple Intelligences (AMI) Study was initiated to develop and explore the use of MI theory in the primary contexts of adult literacy education: Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development exam (GED), adult high school diploma, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). In the first phase of the study (1996-1998), Project staff supported 10 teacher researchers, drawn from New England adult literacy programs to conduct their own MI-related research projects. Project staff and teachers collaborated to produce MI Grows Up: The AMI Study Sourcebook, which includes an introduction to MI theory, articles highlighting key issues in MI application with adult literacy learners, and lessons and activities that are designed to support practitioners setting out to use MI theory in their own adult literacy practices.
In the second phase (1999-2000), AMI staff and three mentor teachers from the original cohort worked with 12 "pilot" teachers from four regions in the U.S. (Baltimore, MD; Houston, TX; Seattle, WA, and Columbus, Ohio). These individuals piloted the Sourcebook in their classrooms and provided important feedback for its subsequent iterations.
